Conflict Kitchen is a take-out restaurant that only serves cuisine from countries that the US is in conflict with. Open on Sat. and Sun. from 11am to 2:30pm, and Mon. through Fri. from 11:30am-2:30pm. Located at 124 South Highland Ave. Pittsburgh, PA

The food is served out of a take-out style storefront, which will rotate identities every four months to highlight another country. Each Conflict Kitchen iteration is augmented by events, performances, and discussion about the culture, politics, and issues at stake with each country they focus on.

Currently presenting the second iteration of Conflict Kitchen via Bolani Pazi, an Afghan take-out restaurant that serves a savory homemade afghan turnover filled with either pumpkin, spinach, lentils, or potatoes and leeks. Developed in collaboration with members of the Afghan community, their bolani comes packaged in a custom-designed wrapper that includes interviews with Afghans both in Afghanistan and the United States on subjects ranging from Afghan food and culture to the current geopolitical turmoil.

Through food, wrappers, programming, and daily interactions with customers, Conflict Kitchen creates an ongoing platform for first-person discussion of international conflict, culture, and politics. In addition, the project introduces a rotating venue for culinary and cultural diversity in Pittsburgh, as future iterations will focus on North Korea, Venezuela, and more.

Conflict Kitchen is a project by Jon Rubin, and Dawn Weleski and is funded by the Sprout Fund, The Waffle Shop, the Center for the Arts in Society, and the sale of food. Graphic design by Brett Yasko. Architectural design by Pablo Garcia of POiNT. This film series on peace and justice themes, now in its sixth year, is sponsored by Pax Christi El Paso and the Peace and Justice Ministry of the Catholic Diocese of El Paso. Admission is free. Donations are graciously accepted but not required. Light refreshments are served, and there is time for discussion after each film. Movies have been scheduled at 3:00 p. m. generally on the second Sunday of each month (but check the schedule for changes) through the end of 2011.
JULY 10TH: BONHOEFFER is a 93-minute documentary film that tells the dramatic story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the young German theologian who offered one of the first clear voices of resistance to Adolf Hitler. Bonhoeffer openly challenged his church to stand with the Jews in their time of need, and eventually joined his family in the plots to kill Hitler. His books, Cost of Discipleship, Letters and Papers from Prison, and Ethics, were written during the struggle and are considered classics in the world of religion and ethics.

The film, shot on location in Germany and the United States, features interviews with family members, friends, students and associates who knew Bonhoeffer personally, including the last interview given by Bonhoeffer's closest friend and biographer, Eberhard Bethge, and an interview with Ruth Alice von Bismarck, the sister of Bonhoeffer's fiancée, Maria von Wedemeyer.

It also features interviews with outstanding historians and theologians including John de Gruchy and Geffrey Kelly, as well as comments from Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Extensive research in archives both in Europe and the US yielded extraordinary archival footage, including a speech by Hitler praying for God's blessing on him and the German people and Bonhoeffer family footage that features the only known moving footage of Dietrich. The production team was also given access to never-before-seen personal and family photographs that help bring visual context to Bonhoeffer's life.

Reading for the voice of Bonhoeffer is actor Klaus Maria Brandauer (Out of Africa, Russia House, etc). The film also features an original score by Emmy-award-winner John Keltonic.

"Bonhoeffer is one of the great examples of moral courage in the face of conflict," explains director/writer Martin Doblmeier. "I believe part of the reason the film is getting attention now is because many of the issues Bonhoeffer faced – the role of the church in the modern world, national loyalty and personal conscience, what the call to being a "peacemaker" really means – are issues we continue to struggle with today."

At the 1968 Democratic National Convention, anti-Vietnam War protestors who were denied permits for demonstrations repeatedly clashed with the Chicago Police Department. Tensions mounted, and an already fraught week culminated in riots broadcast live to a television audience of more than 50 million, further polarizing the nation.

Seeking a scapegoat for the riots, the U.S. government held eight of the most vocal activists accountable for the violence and brought them to trial a year later. Brett Morgen's CHICAGO 10 explores the explosive build-up to—and the eventual unraveling of—the Chicago Conspiracy Trial.

The trial’s defendants represented a broad cross section of the anti-war movement in the late Sixties, from counterculture icons and Yippie leaders Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin to renowned pacifist David Dellinger. Seven of the defendants were represented by Leonard Weinglass and famed liberal attorney William Kunstler, who went head-to-head with prosecution attorney Thomas Foran. The eighth defendant and co-chair of the Black Panther Party, Bobby Seale, insisted on defending himself; Judge Julius Hoffman responded by binding, gagging and handcuffing him to his chair. From the start, the trial was a media circus, with the defendants on a collision course with governmental authority.

A parable of hope, courage and ultimate victory, CHICAGO 10’s unique and unconventional style uses motion-capture animation to portray actual events from the trial, recreating courtroom dramas based on transcripts and interviews. Invisible Children Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial resources to invisible children by documenting their true, untold stories in a creative and relevant way, resulting in positive change. Our goals, or “BIG IDEAS”, can be simplified in three major objectives:

MOVIE: how it all began.
Can a story change the world? In the spring of 2003, three young Americans traveled to Africa in search of such a story. What they found was a tragedy that disgusted and inspired them. A story where children are the weapons and the victims. The “Invisible Children: Rough Cut” film exposes the effects of a 20-year-long war on the children of Northern Uganda. Children who live in fear of abduction by rebel soldiers, and are being forced to fight as part of a violent army. This wonderfully reckless documentary is fast paced, with an MTV beat, and is truly unique. To see Africa through young eyes is humorous and heart breaking, quick and informative - all in the same breath. See this film, you will be forever changed.

MOVEMENT: how it involves you.
After people viewed the movie the one question repeatedly asked was, “What can I do?” And so a non-profit was born in 2004. The Movement is the awareness, mobilization, and fundraising effort taking place throughout America and other countries around the world by people who are inspired to act. The goal of the Movement is to empower the individual viewer to become a part of the story, and “be the change they wish to see in the world” through action.

MISSION: how we are creating change.
The Mission is the ultimate goal of Invisible Children. It is the resources, skills, and funds that hit the ground in Uganda. These resources will provide health, safety and education for the children of Northern Uganda who are affected by this 20-year-long war. The most incredible thing about the performance is that all the dancers are deaf. They are members of the China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe. None of them can hear the music - this makes their choreography a truly amazing achievement. The difficulties and challenges they encountered in training are beyond imagining.

Guan Yin is the bodhisattva of compassion, revered by Buddhists as the Goddess of Mercy. Her name is short for Guan Shi Yin. Guan means to observe, watch, or monitor; Shi means the world; Yin means sounds, specifically sounds of those who suffer. Thus, Guan Yin is a compassionate being who watches for, and responds to, the people in the world who cry out for help.

The ultimate message of this performance can be summed up in the following words from Zhang Jigang, the choreographer who put it all together:

As long as you are kind and there is love in your heart
A thousand hands will naturally come to your aid

The walk they once made to save their lives was now being made to save their brothers and sisters. On April 25th, their desire for peace will become our declaration of change.

Dear Governor Richardson, Senators Bingaman and Udall, Mayor Chavez, Mila Kunis, Drew Stuart, Johnny Chandler and Larry Barker:

On April 25th 2009 Invisible Children is hosting The RESCUE, a rally in 100 cities across ten countries, to bring attention to the plight of the children abducted and forced to fight as soldiers in Central East Africa. For the past 23 years, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the Government of Uganda (GoU) have been waging a war that has left nearly two million innocent civilians caught in the middle. We are asking governments and international bodies to develop a strategy and support existing efforts to rescue the child soldiers abducted by the LRA.

The evening of April 25th, we will be hosting a Rescue event locally in Albuquerque, NM. We are inviting you to join us. However, if you are not going to be in this city on the evening of April 25th, we would love to have you at another of our 100 event locations. Thousands of young people will be at each of these events, and your attendance will strengthen our voice to inspire a generation into action.

The RESCUE is a radically unique event, requiring supporters to ‘abduct themselves for the abducted’. Participants will travel by foot to a pre-determined location in their city that will serve as their “LRA Camp”. There, they will remain ‘abducted’ until a person of great influence or cultural significance arrives and ‘RESCUES’ them by making a public statement on behalf of the child soldiers.

We would like that person to be you.

The call to action: rescue the child soldiers and help finally bring Joseph Kony to justice for his unspeakable crimes against humanity and his continued unwillingness to sign peace. We simply invite you to stand with us and make these children visible.

Here’s how you can help –

1. Come to the meeting place in any city at 4pm on April 25th and “lead” the group to the event location, a.k.a. “LRA Camp”. This will be about a 2-3 mile walk on foot.
2. Come to the camp anytime between 8pm and 11pm. Get up on stage, show your support and introduce a speaker on behalf of Invisible Children.
3. Be the ‘RESCUER.’ Your arrival would represent global attention to this issue and it would “free” the thousands camping out on this night for the child soldiers.

The Rescue on April 25th follows the success of Invisible Children’s previous events, the Global Night Commute in 2006 and Displace Me in 2007, which included nearly 150,000 people collectively. The attention generated from these events widely contributed to the start of the peace talks between the LRA and the Government of Uganda, supported by special envoys from the United States and other nations. The political impact of The RESCUE is anticipated to be historical not only for northern Uganda and its surrounding areas, but for the world as a new generation of activists set a precedence for justice and change through a simple unified act.

The Life and Work of Thich Nhat Hanh
Peace Is Every Step provides an intimate portrait of the life of Thich Nhat Hanh, internationally known Vietnamese Buddhist monk, poet, and Nobel Peace Prize nominee. His main message, delivered in soft-spoken tones, concerns meditation in action. "You get out of the meditation hall," Thich Nhat Hanh says, "and that is called meditation in action. Deep looking is meditation, and deep acting is also meditation."

Since his efforts to end the Vietnam War, which resulted in a forty-year exile from Vietnam, Thich Nhat Hanh has resided in Plum Village, France. Footage of his work in Vietnam and at his monastery in Plum Village, as well as at several retreats in the U.S., weaves a tapestry of his constant efforts at reconciliation. Thich Nhat Hanh served as Chair of the Vietnamese Peace Delegation to the Paris Peace Talks and some of the most interesting moments filmed involve his ongoing interactions with Vietnam Veterans. One of the most touching moments in the film is his visit to the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC.

In Peace Is Every Step, Thich Nhat Hanh reminds viewers to lead a "mindful and meaningful life... The best way to take care of the future," he says, "is to take care of the present moment. There are things we can do, we all can do."

Northern Uganda has been at war for 23 years with a rebel force, the Lord's Resistance Army (L.R.A.), and the country's children are not only the victims of the rebels, they are kidnapped and forced to become the rebels. But amidst this grief and violence, across the country, Ugandan children continue to prepare for the biggest event of the year, the National Music Competition. The Young @ Heart Chorus lost their beloved Fred Knittle, 83, January 1st. Of Barbara, his wife of 57 years, Fred often said that their marriage was based on faith and trust. She had no faith in him and he didn't trust her. And that 'she's a religious cook, everything's a sacrifice or a burnt offering'. It's reported that Fred kept his sense of humor right to the end. In the hospital, with his whole family around him, he'd clutch at his throat and make like he was choking, then laugh at the horrified reaction. Fred Knittle, you will be stayin' alive each time we think about you.

"This is the third year for the El Paso Christmas Light Show. The lights again are in sync with music by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Something special about this year's show is that it was viewed live by a few of the members of TSO before their concert in town. They were amazed with the show and gave the light show 4 STARS at their show the following day. The show will run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. The house is located at 12001 Paseo De Oro which is at the corner of Montwood and Bob Mitchell. When the Young@Heart Chorus began in 1982 the members all lived in an elderly housing project in Northampton, MA called the Walter Salvo House. The first group included elders who lived through both World Wars. The current performers in Young@Heart range in age from 73 to 92. There are some with prior professional theater or music experience, others who have performed extensively on the amateur level, and some who never stepped onto a stage before turning eighty. None of the current performers of Y@H were part of the original group that formed in 1982, but they have kept alive the spirit of the early pioneers and continue to push the group into glorious new directions.
